WORK to bulldoze the old County Buildings, previously home to fire and police stations, has ground to a halt.

Worcestershire County Council started work earlier this year to demolish the buildings in Stourport, which were also used for a medical centre, a library and a coroner’s court before they were relocated.

Now, the authority has confirmed that work has stopped on demolition work due to further bat surveys.

Following online speculation regarding the reason for work stopping, the council said that asbestos removal was carried out before the demolition work started.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “We can confirm asbestos removal was carried out as a pre-requisite to the demolition taking place.

“We are currently awaiting the further BAT surveys to be completed and a BAT licence issued for the further demolition of the main building.

“We are still on track to have the demolition done and the site levelled by the Autumn.”

It was revealed in 2022 that Worcestershire County Council were selling the site, with an application lodged to bulldoze the buildings.

The application was given the green light later that year, with the site earmarked for a new development.
