Wolverley Tennis Club has received an incredible £40,000 funding offer to upgrade its clubhouse.

The club, which was founded in 1952 and is located near Wolverley Memorial Hall, has been offered funding to replace the current building constructed in brick and corrugated sheeting with an all-brick structure.

The clubhouse has been at Wolverley Tennis Club for more than 70 years but has become dilapidated over time with members hoping the work will provide them with a dry facility to shelter and store equipment.

Club member, Lyndon Darkes, said: "The building has given 70 years of good service but if we can generally improve it and add a veranda, it would be so much better for everyone at the tennis club.

"Currently the roof and corrugated walls need to be completely replaced, so it would be fantastic to have a building where we can shelter and keep our equipment.

"It would also be a great relief for our members to have access to usable toilet facilities at long last. Hopefully, if all goes well, we can get another 70 years of use from it."

The team are hoping to submit a planning application soon and the project is expected to be completed by a team of volunteers and contractors by Christmas 2024, but is subject to planning approval and agreement with Wolverley Memorial Charitable Trust.

The Trust has a 99-year lease on the land from the Parish Council and controls the land comprising the field, tennis courts, Wolverley Sports and Social Club, bowling green and Memorial Hall for the benefit of Wolverley residents.

Secretary at Wolverley Tennis Club, David Palmer, said: "The club has been here for over 70 years and this offer of funding provides the ideal opportunity to improve the facilities and upgrade the building for the benefit of our members if planning is approved and agreement is obtained from the Wolverley Memorial Charitable Trust."

As well as the funding offer, the club, which has two floodlit courts, is continuing to grow from offering members coaching through partner We Do Tennis to starting a walking tennis group before Christmas.

Anyone is welcome to join with the club emphasising the health benefits of playing tennis.

Club member, Boyd Fallon, added: "We are a community club that's there for the community from coaching youngsters to walking tennis which is ideal for older people and those with knee injuries.

"Everyone is welcome here."
