A PLANNING application seeking to build 79 homes in Bewdley has been given the thumbs up.

The proposed homes are set to be built on a field known as the 'Stourport Road Triangle.'

Residents near the site previously raised concerns over increased traffic congestion on the roads surrounding the site and the safety of pedestrians.

The reserved matters application was approved by Wyre Forest District Council's planning committee at a meeting this week.

The triangular-shaped field, which is currently used for animal grazing, is allocated for around 100 homes. A previous outline planning application for homes on the site was approved last year.

The developer will be providing affordable homes, bungalows, homes for people with disabilities and those looking to downsize. The development is also set to feature a children's play area.

The planning application received 14 objections on Wyre Forest District Council's planning website.

One objector said: "Traffic on Stourport Road is already gridlocked several times a day."

Another said: "The access onto Stourport Road will cause an increase in traffic congestion with a leisure facility and two schools on the same road and a traffic survey during term times must be done.

"The vehicles trying to drive and park on Stourport Road already cause a huge risk to pedestrian safety and has a huge effect the quality of life for residents in the area. This will only be made worse by the increased traffic volumes".

Another said: "Traffic congestion is a major concern, with accessibility on the Stourport Road being beyond capacity at certain times of the day when the schools are open.

"This has increased as part of the road is now closed for 18-22 months for flood defence work".

Stourport Road resident Nicholas Mayman said that he was “not happy at all” following the meeting and said he was interested in looking to seek a judicial review of the plan.
